I’m back from my Cologne weekender and what a weekend it was! I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to head to this lovely city for 2 days and explore somewhere that I was yet to visit. Cologne has the perfect amount to keep you busy during a short stay. Couple that with some awesome weather and you can understand why my first impression on this place was great!
Cologne Weekender – Arriving In Cologne.
I arrived in Cologne a little late after a slight delay at the airport. Fortunately the journey to the city centre was really easy so I hopped on a train and made my way towards the action! The central train station is located right beside the beautiful Cologne cathedral. What an amazing building and one of my favourite spots to visit! It was night-time when I got there but still fairly busy so I had a quick walk around before making my way towards my accommodation. After an easy check in, a good nights sleep and an early start I was back on the streets of Cologne. This time it was minus the crowds. I went to the cathedral again to get some photos before then making my way down towards the river and Hohenzollern Bridge.
Cologne Weekender – Breakfast Hunt.
During my time in Cologne I caught very few trains or buses to get around, it was all walking. I love it when a city is so packed full of things to do that you can causally walk between them all. All the walking did make me hungry though and on my first morning I had a breakfast spot that I was looking for. It was called Edelgrun and it was a place I found online selling some clean eating favorites of mine. I managed to find it and got myself an acai bowl which was super, super tasty! After this and a quick caffeine boost I headed underground for my first and only train. After that nice healthy start it was on to the chocolate museum!
Cologne Weekender – The Chocolate Museum.
The chocolate museum is a place everyone should check out whilst in Cologne. Even if your visit is brief, it’s worth it. It’s located right opposite the Old Town and is near the cathedral. It wasnt far at all from where I was staying (nothing was!) so I had to go for a peak inside. There are 9 exhibition areas that make up this funky building and they cover the full culture and history of chocolate. It was so interesting learning about its history, right from its very beginnings all the way up until the refinement and manufacturing of chocolate in today’s world. All of this was topped off by a little taster from the chocolate fountain and a few treats on departure. Definitely worth a walk around whether you’re a chocolate lover or not!
Cologne Weekender – Koncept Hotels.
I back and forth from my hotel all the time during my stay purely because of its excellent location! I was staying with Koncept Hotels right in the centre of Old Town Cologne. The hotel has a unique digital concept behind it making the check in, check out and opening of your door super simple (All done via mobile phone!) I was staying in room 305 and it was great for my 2 night stay. It was very spacious and had all the provisions I’ve come to expect in a good facility. Just outside my window was the hustle and bustle of the Old Town and in the distance was the beautiful Cologne cathedral. Koncept Hotels was a great base for my exploration of the city. I enjoyed being right by all the hot spots!
Cologne Weekender – Cologne Cathedral.
With Cologne cathedral being right outside my window it did emphasise how it was placed so close. I did pass by it a lot during the 2 days! A trip to the top was definitely on my agenda but I made sure I timed it right. I wanted to have some good weather whilst up high! I’d definitely recommend heading to the top as you get an epic view of the Old Town and all of its colourful houses, the Hohenzollern Bridge and the Cologne telecommunications tower. There are a lot of steps to climb to get to the top but as always, it’s worth it! To go to the top of the tower you do have to pay but out of anywhere I’ve been this was the most reasonably priced. Save yourself €4, grab your camera and get up there!
Cologne Weekender – Cologne By Night.
After my time at the top of Cologne cathedral I made my way back down and started the search for a dinner spot. I was going to hang around the riverside and get some sunset photos but the clouds rolled in a ruined that. All that was left to do was to wait until night came. I then planned to get back out there with my camera! I walked along the riverside as this was the area with some really cool places to eat. Not being overly fussy I jumped in and grabbed a table at the first place that looked appealing. Before I knew it, I’d had a nice big tasty dinner and the city had descended into darkness. Not complete darkness by all means! The bridge and cathedral were illuminated with colours and that was what I wanted to capture behind my lens!
With a bit of night photography done I headed back for my final night at my hotel. I only had a short time in the city the following morning and my plan was simply to relax! Cologne made a great first impression on me. I’m sure that at some point in my future travels I’ll return for anther visit. Have you been to Cologne before? Let me know in the comments what you thought and where your favourite spot were?!
(Huge thankyou to Koncept Hotels for hosting me during my stay in Cologne. All opinions expressed are my own!)
