Hey everyone. Back with another travel blog and this one is all about my time exploring Reykjavik in Iceland. I already see myself going back to Iceland one day. I’m now even more motivated to do so as I didn’t catch a glimpse of the northern lights! Missing the lights didn’t put a dampener on my trip. I did tonnes of exploring and had a great time doing so.
Exploring Reykjavik – Laugavegur Street.
After a nice early start and some straight forward travel I arrived in Reykjavik. It was a reasonably late arrival and I didn’t have long but I really needed to stretch my legs after travelling for so long. I made my way to the shore for a wander and once stretched out I headed back to my hotel to get wrapped up warm. Cue northern lights cancellation number 1. This was my plan for the evening. Once that fell through I went straight to Laugavegur Street to check out the shopping and all of the various places to eat. This street also eventually leads on to the Hallgrimskirkja church but I checked this out at a different time. I had an early start the following day so I went back to my room with tired feet and dropped off instantly!
Exploring Reykjavik – The GOlden Circle.
The Golden Circle filled my second day. It was an early start but we headed straight to Thingvellir National Park. It was such a nice day as you can see pictured which made experiencing this place even better. Several photos later we departed again and next up was the Geysir geothermal area. The main attraction here was the geyser named Strokkur This one shot water up to 30m in the air every few minutes and I caught a few good photos of it firing away. After a quick bit of exploration here it was time to head to the last location which was Gulfoss waterfall. This waterfall was another power creation by mother nature. The icy cold water was plunging into a crevice approximately 32m deep. After taking in the views around the falls it was home and food time before northern lights cancellation number 2.
Exploring Reykjavik – The sun voyager, Old Reykjavik Harbour and Hallgrímskirkja church.
My last day started by heading towards the shore again. The first thing I encountered was the Sun Voyager as you can see pictured. Further along the shore I made it to the vibrantly coloured old Reykjavik harbour. After a little break from walking I strolled away from the shore and ascended a long road to the iconic Hallgrímskirkja church. I had a quick peak inside (didn’t make it to the top!) before heading outside to the waffle van. Happy with my waffle I headed back to my room ready for northern lights cancellation number 3. Not getting to see the lights on my final night all that was left to do was get some sleep. Turned out to be a very lengthy journey home in the early hours. An amazing weekend though with reason to return!
