Staying With Koncept Hotels

During my recent trip to Cologne I was fortunate enough to find myself staying with Koncept Hotels for 2 nights. With a brand new digital concept I was eager to see how it worked and experience what they had to offer. The hotel was perfectly placed in the heart of Old Town Cologne which put me right in the centre of all the action. I loved being so close to pretty much everything I wanted to visit. On my likely return to Cologne I’d stay here again for that reason!

Staying With Koncept Hotels – Checking In.

So what is the digital concept behind the hotel? Simply put, everything to do with my stay was done on my mobile phone. In today’s world that is actually a no brainer. Most people have a smart phone and use it on a daily basis, including me. So before my arrival I checked in via the mobile app named HotelBird. Once checked in I received my room key on the app. All I had to do once I had accessed my digital key was hold it next to my door and press the unlock button (pictured below) With a quick click my door was open and I was into room 305, the room with a view!

As you can see from that view out the window I was super close to the cathedral and Old Town Cologne. With a short walk I could also get down to the Rhine river where I was then able to cross the Hohenzollern Bridge. Great location for sure! The room itself was lovely and I had a very comfy 2 night stay. It was super spacious, had cooking facilities and a great little work space which I made use of each day when editing. The rooms were maintained well which is always good to see in a new facility. I loved the vintage record theme and the record player that worked via bluetooth for a bit of music!

Staying with Koncept Hotels – Checking Out.

I unfortunately wasn’t able to get into the dining area at the hotel as it was closed during my stay. This being said, I think it would be a cool little area to have your morning coffee! I did find plenty of places for a drink right outside the hotel which then set me up for my days of exploration. Cologne is a great place and I felt I got a good insight into the city.  After my final bit of trekking it was then time for my departure. Leaving the hotel was simple. All I had to do was pull up the app on my phone and hit ‘check out’. This did the job and when leaving I just dropped my main door key card in the funky gumball machine.

Staying with Koncept Hotels – A Few Thoughts.

Koncept Hotels bring a very simplified and efficient approach which I absolutely love. I’ve been in scenarios where I have arrived at a facility and it’s taken forever to get checked in. The speedy access to my room in this case was definitely welcomed! This being said I do have a few thoughts to consider. The digital concept and the fact your key is on your phone is great, but you must make sure that your phone stays charged. You’ll likely be out all day using your phone for photos, navigation etc . . . so it may loose battery. Carry a charger with you so you don’t end up getting locked out!

Secondly, it’s a great place if you want to be right in the heart of Cologne and all of its action. It’s why I loved it  there! I wouldn’t however suggest it is the place for you to go if you want to be in bed by 9 o’clock. The hustle and bustle out of the window was lively and I was involved in it most of the time but I can imagine it’s quite noisy if you were trying to sleep though it!

All in all, it’s a great place and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it for your stay in Cologne. Koncept Hotels, I’ll be back!

Thanks for reading, see you in the next one!

(Huge thanks to Koncept Hotels for hosting me in Cologne, all opinions expressed are my own)

  1. Pretty cool to see these accommodations moving to the digital platform. I’ve seen some of these keyless entries with some Hilton Hotels – haven’t tried it myself. Love how the bedroom looks! The gumball machine looks like a creative attempt with the checking out process. Glad you enjoyed the stay overall!

    1. Ahh interesting to see some bigger companies utilising it also! I just worry about phones loosing battery! Great place though, so nicely located! Thanks Nancy!

    1. Think it will become more of a regular thing soon! Maybe an option though as it’s still nice to speak to someone and get welcomed!

  2. Wow, this sounds like such a cool idea. Checking in on your phone and having a digital door key is really smart. Good thinking having a back up charger, my iPhone eats up battery so fast when I’m out and about taking photos and getting lost with Google maps he he. The hotel photos look awesome and I’m loving the gumball machine too! Great post Gary, glad you enjoyed your stay <3 xx

    1. It’s definitely a new one for me but yes I have the same situation with my phone always going dead! Glad I was prepared! Thanks for reading Bexa, hope you’ve had a good day!

    1. I think it will definitely become an option in most places. Very cool for the quick check in but would you miss speaking to someone?! We shall see!! Thanks for reading Jas!

  3. awesome post! it’s so cool how much technology can help us these days! the hotel lookes absolutely stunning as do the view from the hotel! posts like these always make me want to travel more!

    1. Crazy how much technology is involved in everything we do but that’s today’s world i guess! Thanks for reading Michelle! 😁

    1. I almost got caught out, my phone always dies but luckily I’m also always prepared! I loved the concept though, was so quick and easy! Thanks for reading!

    1. I think it really is a great idea and think it will be an option for a lot of hotels soon! A very cool concept! Thanks for reading!

  4. This looks amazing! I visited Cologne for 3 days in 2015 and loved it. We stayed a little bit out of the central area though, about a 10 min train ride into the main city, by the Dom etc. The location for this hotel looks superb! Great review and photos and such an interesting way of checking in/out. Same as you though, I was thinking in the back of my mind about how you’d have to keep some charge on your phone!

    1. Ah glad you liked it as much as I did, Cologne is a great city! Best thing about this place was the location, was super central so could walk everywhere! Thanks for reading!

  5. The view looks amazing! I’m really glad you added that little bit at the end. From the second you said the key was on your phone I had a million different scenarios going through my head (999,999 of them unlikely) of all the ways that could go wrong. It’s a great concept but I’d be very concerned about losing my phone, my phone dying, crashing, etc and getting locked out. In my ideal world we’d have this option and still have a person on a desk in case of emergency situations.

    1. It’s a great idea but definitely a few things to consider! I think it may be an option in hotels at some point but like you said there will always be staff there if needed or for emergency situations like loosing your phone!

  6. The digital access thing is really cool! However, as you mentioned, you need to keep your phone charged in order to keep yourself being locked out. Cologne looks like a pretty city. Would love to explore. Thanks for this lovely post, Gary!

    1. Ah thanks Renuka, definitely agree with you there though also! Keep your phone charged and no problems! Highlight was that it was all very quick! Thanks for reading!!

  7. Seems like it was a great modern and quick check in service which is always a bonus if you only have a short time to explore. Would definitely like to stay here!

  8. This is such a cool concept! And the hotel itself has such a cool interior! I had no idea something like checking in with your phone was a thing so this is pretty amazing! x

  9. Like the quick check/check out system at Koncept hotel, it also looks like a convenient base for sightseeing.
